Solar Power a Bright Idea

Modern homes have long had a greater pull for the environmentally-conscious homebuyer.

Such was the case with Mr and Mrs Kirschener, who moved to a new home in Trinity Gate, Cambridge, last year.  “We have always lived in new properties since moving to the UK” says James Kirschener who relocated to Cambridge from Germany two years ago.  “Our home in Trinity Gate is very modern to look at so it lends itself well to the sort of eco-friendly improvements we have made.”

Upon moving in James and his wife Wencke installed glass solar panels on the roof to assist the gas central heating.  “Since doing so, our heating bills have certainly been much lower.  We expect that in the summer months we’ll be able to use them to produce hot water without the gas at all, saving us even more.”

Solar energy is clean, cost efficient and reliable, and helps reduce carbon emissions as well as saving on fuel bills.  Solar panels or tubes can even be used in cloudy weather.

“They were costly to put in,” James admits.  “And as to whether or not they offset the initial costs in the future we’ll have to wait and see!”  He continues: “I would recommend installing solar panels, or making any kind of eco-friendly changes to a property.  As well as being good for the environment, these features set a property apart from the others around it.  I believe a modern home should try to go that extra step and be truly new.  Many ‘modern’ properties mimic the style of older ones, but the individuality of this one was what drew us to it.”

James has found that awareness of energy-saving techniques is generally less established in the UK than in Germany.  “Germany started earlier,” he says, “but the UK will catch up.”
